The above, mint condition dog license sold recently for $1,009.00. It is the most elaborately designed, full dog body shaped ever seen in a pre 1900 and came with an original brass S-Hook. This kind of tag is a chance in a lifteime purchase. The price paid for this humdinger will not be supported for long as things Change in the collecting community. I have seen one other tag from the 1800's that was most interesting and the only one of its shape. It was a horseshoe shaped tag with a dog head in the middle. The Morgan Park 1892 #23 sister tag, below is the second highest dog license ever sold. It sold for $865.00. Both tags were kept and never worn on a dogs collar. Brass S-Hooks were commonly used back in the day to attach tags onto collars, but they will not securely hold a tag on for long. The swinging motion and weight of even a small tag would certainly have weakened the brass hook or the loop hole itself enough for it to escape the tags' grasp.
Another pre 1900 tag from IOWA that was sold recently to a lucky winner....
