Happy Tails

Pet Therapy Interactive Support Group

Diane created and organized "Happy Tails" a volunteer based Pet Therapy Interactive Support Group which serves Pittsburgh Area assisted living residents and various rehabilitation centers. The program offers hands on personal contact with a selection of approved and temperament tested canines and felines.

The encounters usually last 1 hour and are accompanied with dog license presentations, antique dog collar exhibits, a brief discussion of past and present canine tax laws, fees and trivia. Questions are answered and photos are taken and presented to residents on their bulletin board. Grooming tips and safe behavior around pets are also discussed. The volunteers rotate pets and mingle with the residents. The seniors just radiate with happiness when they see the pet brigade come in to their activities room. The pets love the attention and they enjoy working for hugs and kisses.

*donations are gratefully appreciated and go towards transportation costs, crates, K-9 service vests and escalating veterinary care.

Early spaying and neutering prevents unwanted litters of dogs and cats. Shelters all over the world are euthanizing healthy animals because more pets are born than there are adoptive homes for them. This is totally preventable - "Fix" your pet by 6 months of age. We advocate adoption from shelters and rescue groups. Never buy a pet from a pet store, internet source, newspaper ad, or backyard breeder.
